HOLY OF HOLIES 2021
The Holy of Holies Art Show was birthed out of a vision to create a divine space featuring solely trans, intersex & non-binary artists.
Historically, in many cultures, gender-diverse individuals have been associated with the divine. Our divinity does not come from an outward source; it comes from within and from our own experiences. Whether or not we consider ourselves spiritual or religious, everything we do is divine. This show will give viewers an opportunity to see what it means to be trans, intersex and non-binary, surviving and thriving in The Bible Belt. Many of us have had traumatic experiences with organized religion; this show is meant to take back the spiritual and physical space that history has tried to erase from us. As divine beings, this show is an offering to our trans and non-binary ancestors. May we live, thrive and honor them.
In 2021, we hosted the first Holy of Holies Art Show and Market. We surprised ourselves when 1810 Ojeman reached capacity by 9:30 p.m. on a Friday Night in the dirty B. We had motorcyclist as our doormen and everyone from trump supporters to pastors to atheist to 304’s and SW’er’s in the room. I was shocked. A lot of us were shocked. To be in a space talking about Jesus, religious trauma, art and the aftermath of healing or not healing can shock a lot of people. I love that about life. walking into a bar and being surprised at who you meet. I love it.
We dealt with some hate from local small businesses over our posters which were beautifully created by local Houston tattoo artist, Julian Solis and printed by Triangle Printing. We made sure to support transgender and non-binary artist at each step and/or use small businesses who support our community. Our goal was to send artist home with as few art pieces as possible and to give a percentage to local non-profits who help queer and trans youth who are currently experiencing homelessness.
The following people helped create and build this space & to them I thank and love: Saskia, Alex, 1810 Ojeman Fam, Calvin, Mo, Thunder, Kevin, San Jacinto High Rollers, Fight Club, Oliver, Dj J - Big Madd, Evonna, Ash, Ka Silver, Suzanne, Soni, Chan, Mel, Edon, Julian Solis, Phoenix, Steph, J Devan, Tammy and Jesus.
